Fun on the Web Oct 31 2012 Happy Halloween

Are you expecting the kiddies tonight? I am so not looking forward to this, since its too cold out there (32 degrees right now and under 50 later).

Not feeling great, so I am home and slept in today :-) Not sure what to do except tell it like it is here. I am looking for additional streams of income so I am going to try surveys. I know this maybe time consuming but I will report back on how they do for me.

First regarding NCP or Nation Consumer Panel I am taking a pass. I read a lot of online chatter about how time consuming it is and between a part time (almost full time job), ebay and surveys, I think I am better off without this one even if it is related to AC Nielsen. I maybe be influenced by knowing how penny pinching Neilsen is because I worked for them for years.

Next, people always wonder if they can do surveys if not in the US. Yes you can!  Here is a list of valid sites for consumers outside the US. Please note NCP is on each of them, which makes a good deal of sense since AC Neilsen is an international company. http://www.reviewopedia.com/international-online-surveys.htm

Last, I am going to tell you that if you only use a cell phone you may want to fib. You will get lots of calls starting right after the sign up process, for things you do not want. Best choice after fibbing, answer all these calls, tell them right away they are unwanted, even if you have to interrupt or talk over them, and finally demand they remove you from their list. They are a tenacious bunch and will call countless times if you don't.

". . . I always wore homemade Halloween costumes, right up until 6th grade when I was a gypsy fortune teller and enjoyed my last year of trick-or-treating. My mother wasn’t a seamstress, she just expected us to be creative and thrifty. When I worked as a nanny in college, we largely pieced together the kid’s costumes from stuff we had at home."

" Then something happened, and I can’t quite put my finger on how or why, but Halloween became porny."

" In these parts, starting mid-August, the Halloween super-stores move into vacant retail space with a short term lease and a truck load of cheaply-made costumes fresh off the Chinese shipping container, all of which resemble porny versions of character xyz in what is essentially a repackaged French maid uniform. " Actually, the whole pornography tie-in isn’t all that far off. In my local Halloween super store, my kids call it the Goody Bloody Store, almost all of the costumes they carry are by a company called Leg Avenue. On the website the costumes look very pretty….in the store they looked thin and cheap. Leg Avenue also makes lingerie, burlesque show wear, club wear, and pasties. Some of their stuff is tasteful – very sexy and very adult. As a sex positive adult, I can appreciate that. But it just seems odd to me that I can go from the page selling pasties and burlesque booty shorts and in three clicks be on Cutie Bug or Beautiful Butterfly costume, size Child Small. My real problem with the costumes is that the evolution of a child’s costume to teen costume to adult costume isn’t that far off from each other. They all fit the French maid costume equation, and the youth costumes carry culturally coded wardrobe components that, in the past, had been signals for adult sex work: fishnets, lace up bodices, bustiers, high heeled knee-high boots, knee socks and bare upper thighs, booty shorts, etc."

" Somewhere along the line, Halloween stopped being about scariness and fantasy, and became a holiday of packaged sex. When every store you go in to is carrying these sexy children’s costumes, and has been for years, it stops being a one-season market fluke, and becomes a reflection of our culture. Some of the best pictures of space are those published by NASA. If you would like see them used as your Windows wallpaper, check out a free program called My Daily Space Wallpaper.

The program automatically changes your wallpaper image each time you start up your PC, from a library of almost 300 superb NASA images. The program itself is a tiny 0.1 MB download, though obviously there's an image download each day (or whenever you press the button to download a new one).

Fun on the Web Oct 11 2012 Travel Sites

I don't know about anyone else but I am NOT ready for fall. I know we need it but cold and rainy is just not working for me. It makes me want to stay home inside or travel to someplace warm. Neither of these options go with my current lifestyle.

Apparently the Frugal Traveler has the same thoughts since he just published the 10 Travel Sites Worth Bookmarking. Although most of these are for help with European travel there is at least one for the domestic traveler looking for a meal. Don't we all want to know where we can get a decent meal in a strange town?

For those who don't know me well, I have traveled all over the country and to both Canada and Mexico. My sage advice for finding a good meal is ask the locals. Ask before you go for recommendations on where you can get a great meal and ask when you get there in the restaurant. I usually say to my server "what is your best dish or what do you personally like the most here?"

It has brought me many memorable meals. Often. I do take the servers suggestion and then tell them how much I liked whatever it was. The server is more likely to give you better service after taking their suggestion.  They will often recognize you if you return in a day or two and suggest another dish you may enjoy.

Most people who know me, know that I am seldom in a WalMart since I think they are disgraceful. They are the example of what is wrong in this country taking from the poor and concentrating the wealth to the already rich.

The reality is they sell shoddy and lower class goods to people who are looking to buy cheap. They pay their workers poorly and forcing them to use food stamps and public health care because of providing less than a living wage. Instead let's Buy American

OMG Black Friday ad leaks . . . already???? The unofficial start of holiday shopping is the day after Thanksgiving (Friday). Most stores offer Door-buster Sales with some kind of early bird special to attract consumers to their stores. People stand in line hours before stores open, to grab the big deal of the year but I suggest getting there 20-30 minutes after the store opens. You may miss the deal but most times not and you DO miss the craziness.

Here are just some of the best sites to check when planning your shopping. Many offer email alerts too. Most big box stores (Best Buy, Target, CVS) have ads leaked way before Thanksgiving. Don't forget those online gift sites as well (Harry & David, Swiss Colony, and Red Envelope.)

Of course retail giant Amazon has special deals ending at different times each day to lure you to their site over and over.Just put Black Friday in their search box and then bookmark the Black Friday page. They also have a Cyber Monday page, Gold Box Deals, and Top Holiday Deals page. Don't forget to update your wish list while you are there.

Fun on the Web Oct 3 2012 Better Late than Never

I am a little bit late in writing today but better late than never. Yesterday and today were a little traumatic. I had a cable to the power window snap when I was away from home. This required several hours of high speed driving to get to my local auto body shop.

Now you may ask why I came to my local auto body shop? Consider what happens if the repair goes wrong. Do I really want to drive several hours to get it corrected? So I called my local garage to get a suggestion. This also happens when I am gone with a need for mechanics too.

Ladies a good garage is money in your pocket. This is also true when you need a used car. Call the owner of the garage you trust. Even if they are not selling cars for their customers, they may know someone who is selling a reliable runner.

Also I live in a Norman Rockwellesque type community where the first words were "do you need a ride home." (Yes they also picked me up AND charged less than I was quoted.) This is the same community where when my debit card wouldn't work and I hadn't brought my checkbook to the grocery store, the manager said "oh just pay us next time you are here."

There are advantages to living in a small town. If you just keep the shades down they don't know everything you do. . . LOL
