Fun on the Web Sept 1 2014 Behind the Music

I know I have a reputation for loving blues but I do acknowledge other forms of music

Do you know that VH1 used to show the careers of musicians...these shows give you an idea of what their music was (and is) like. It also tells about their lives and the culture of the times. I always found them very interesting.

Like Meatloaf who was in both "Hair" and "Rocky Horror Picture Show" both of which were iconic shows back in the day. He has been up and down, done a lot of drugs, had a nervous breakdown, lost his voice, won a Grammy, made a comeback, sung with Pavarotti, had a heart attack, you name it. It is an amazing story!

One could never have pictured this 300 pound man as a rock star. I saw him in concert once and he seemed larger than life with such a powerful voice. He has starred in movies, TV shows, Broadway, and even a season of Celebrity Apprentice.

And there is a natural segue to Cher who performed at one point with Meatloaf. Another musical and fashion icon since the 60's and at almost 70 years old is still going strong. Cher has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. She has sold over 100 Million albums, been a TV star with and without Sonny Bono. been a movie star, headlined in Vegas for three years straight, written a book, designed clothes, reinvented herself over and over.

John Lennon is another icon from the sixties and I confess to Beatlemania from the beginning. Paul was my favorite Beatle so much of this "Behind the Music" was news to me although I knew vaguely about John's career post Beatles. Everyone knew he left Cynthia and took up with Yoko who at that point was unilaterally hated.

They were prominent in the anti-war movement. They shared a love of art and John was quite the cartoonist. He had two sons in different decades, one with each wife so they both were raised as "only children". He was overwhelmed with effects of the incessant touring during Julian's childhood in England but Sean was raised by John the house husband.in the US.

Into the world of the Blues burst Janis Joplin. Port Arthur was never ready for her. Big Brother and the Holding Company was. Unfortunately drugs ended her life too soon.
