Today is Chinese New Year which has significance for millions around the world. It is the Year of the Horse. In general, the lucky colors of team horse are are green, red and purple; the lucky numbers are three, four and nine, and the lucky flowers are giant taro and jasmine. the year of the horse is a year in which people are likely to stand firm on their principles, making negotiation difficult.

Before the New Year's celebration, people will normally do a complete cleaning of the house, settle debts, and put on the traditional New Year decoration. A lunar month is around 2 days shorter than a solar month. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar, an extra month is inserted every few years. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.
Chinese New Year celebrations, also known as the Spring Festival, in China start on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month of the Chinese calendar lasts for about 23 days. In other countries it may be just a 15 day celebration. It is celebrated with lion dances, fireworks, family gatherings, family meals, visiting friends and relatives, giving red envelopes of "lucky money" to friends and relatives (use numbers ending in 8), and decorating with poems on red paper.
