Fun on the Web Nov 4 2012 Milestone National Documents

How long has it been since you read the Bill of Rights or the Constitution? These are cornerstones of our democracy but do we stop and think about them?

We are facing an election Tuesday that is not just about the men and women we vote for but for two widely verging ideologies. Do we support the Federal government in providing for the welfare of our America: roads, waterways, environment, and our seniors or are we about making the rich richer at everyone elses expense?

Look at what our forefathers intended when they formed a more perfect nation. From the Declaration of Independence "When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness..."

and from the Constitution Section 8 "Section. 8. The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States; ..."

To put it bluntly, it does not say we should create a Kingdom or an Oligarchy where the workers take care of an upper class. That is the system we left behind. It says we are created equal and the rich should pay too. It does not say that companies are people
